Your Health: How Medicinal Mushrooms Work

Posted on: July 26th, 2010 by EcoNugenics 2 Comments

Certain mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in Eastern cultures for their health benefits. Yet, in most of the contemporary Western world, they are virtually unknown. So what exactly are they, and why are they so special?

Beneficial mushrooms were originally cultivated and used as tonics and in teas in the practice that became Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” also utilized mushrooms that demonstrated potent immune system supporting qualities. Among the most well known mushrooms that have demonstrated beneficial properties are Reishi, Shittake, Cordyceps, Maitake, and Coriolus. All of these varieties have been studied to show powerful immune modulating and health promoting properties. The beta glucans unique to each mushroom are the little miracle workers responsible for some of the powerful health benefits found within their cell walls. Beta glucans are phytochemicals best known for modulating healthy immune cell activity in the body.*

Exciting research shows that these mushrooms can activate macrophages, important immune cells that attack and destroy foreign viruses or bacteria. For example, the Maitake mushroom contains a powerful beta glucan called grifolan, which activates macrophages. Shiitake mushrooms contain a compound called lentinan, which has been shown to triggered the immune system to target unhealthy cells. Maitake can also help to maintain normal blood sugar levels and normal insulin sensitivity.* You can learn more by downloading Dr. Eliaz’s free report about beneficial mushrooms’ effects on the immune system and the body.

For supporting overall health and vitality, EcoNugenics offers Ten Mushroom Formula, a comprehensive, mushroom mycelium blend of 10 clinically proven beneficial mushrooms. These ten types of mushrooms have been shown to provide a broad and balanced range of supportive actions for multiple systems in the body, with specific benefits to the cardiovascular, liver, digestive, urinary, nervous, and immune systems. Additional beta-1,3 glucans purified from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, are added to this formula, boosting the immune strengthening actions of this unique formula.

The mushroom mycelium in this blend includes the following species: Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Fu Ling (Poria cocos), Caterpillar (Cordyceps sinensis), Tremella fuciformis, Zhu Ling (Polyporus umbellatus), Turkey Tails (Coriolus versicolor), Maitake (Grifola frondosa), Shiitake (Lentinus edodes), Wood Ear Fungus (Auricularia), and Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus). Those who are allergic to mushrooms can still use this product, as it contains no actual part of the spore containing fruiting bodies of mushrooms, but rather of the mycelium. The mycelium is the essential vegetative growing body of the fungus that sprouts the mushrooms (fruiting bodies) that you see above the ground or on bark and tree stumps, and we are more familiar with as a culinary mushrooms. All of the mushrooms contained in the Ten Mushroom Formula are grown in the United States in controlled indoor environments and have been carefully tested to assure purity and consistency.

These mushrooms are combined in precise ratios to work synergistically and provide integrative benefits in support of the body system as a whole. This formula is specifically designed for long term use, to gently nourish your body with the powerful phytonutrient compounds present in these health supporting mushrooms.* They are a unique gift from nature, and as more research continues on the vast array of bioactive elements present within mushrooms, we may find that they truly are a miracle food.
