There is a lot of controversy and debate surrounding vaccines, especially immunizations for children. We all know vaccines are revelatory because they prevent us from contracting terrible diseases and viruses. The efficacy of vaccines is proven, as history has shown a dramatic reduction in diseases such as measles, rubella, smallpox, and polio. However, while vaccines for conditions such as polio may be considered crucial or common-sense, not all vaccines are created equal. Nor are they financed equally.
Vaccines, simply put, prepare the immune system for fighting a serious bacterial or viral infection. They consist of weakened or dead pathogenic cells or strains of a virus that promote production of antibodies by the immune system. One of the most commonly received vaccines is the annual flu vaccine. It’s important to note that this year’s flu vaccine will contain the new H1N1 vaccination, along with two other new forms of flu virus. While not to underestimate the danger of the H1N1 virus when contracted, the threat of the H1N1 pandemic has widely covered been by the media, in some cases excessively. Of further concern is the fact that the original H1N1 vaccine was largely experimental and has been linked to neurological damage and other complications.
So is it worth getting the flu, or getting the flu vaccine? Well, vaccine manufacturers would have you believe it’s much more important to get the vaccine. Global vaccine sales rose 16% from last year, earning $22.1 billion, according to health care market researcher Kalorama Information. A recent article from the Wall Street Journal stated, “Vaccines against hepatitis and flu — boosted by the global scare over the H1N1 flu epidemic last year — have been driving sales of adult vaccines.” The top five manufacturers of vaccines are the same top five pharmaceutical companies. “It is estimated that vaccine sales will rise at a compound annual rate of 9.7 percent during the next five years, fueled by wider use of current vaccines and introduction of new ones. That would push sales to roughly $35 billion. Sales in 2008 were barely half as much, at $19 billion.” Clearly new, yearly flu vaccines and vaccines promoted for “deadly” strains are highly lucrative.
It’s important to have information regarding not just vaccines, but also natural approaches to immune enhancement, and alternatives to conventional pharmacology. EcoNugenics incorporates a variety of medicinal mushrooms in many of our formulations, but our most popular medicinal mushroom nutraceutical during the flu season is MycoPhyto Complex, which is designed to activate Natural Killer cells in the immune system. This unique formula contains six potent, botanically enhanced medicinal mushroom species, which have been scientifically researched for their immune enhancing properties. MycoPhyto has been shown to be a powerful supplement for promoting a strong immune system. Each mushroom in the formula has been selected to complement and enhance the function of the other mushrooms synergistically. Individuals allergic to mushrooms can still use this product, as it contains no actual part of the spore, but rather the mycelium, or subterranean portion of the mushroom. All medicinal mushrooms contained in MycoPhyto are grown in the United States, in controlled environments, and are tested to assure purity and consistency.
