A small flower native to Britain contains a chemical capable of destroying dysfunctional, abnormal cells that have amassed in the body. The autumn crocus flower contains colchicine, a highly toxic substance, which has been isolated to be used to target abnormal cells that have grown out of control, while leaving normal cells and tissue unharmed.

The news comes from the recent presentation at the British Science Festival held in Bradford, where researchers at the University of Bradford developed the drug. Professor Laurence Patterson, who leads the research team at the University of Bradford, states, “What we’ve designed is, effectively, a ‘smart bomb’ that can be targeted directly… without appearing to harm healthy tissue.”

In in-vivo laboratory tests, the compound was successful against abnormal cells of the breast, bowel, lung and prostate. Initial results show that half the subjects appeared to be completely cured after just one injection of the drug, and all other subjects responded positively to the drug. Dependent on funding, the drug may soon come to trial on patients at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.
