What’s on YOUR Produce?

Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit environmental and consumer advocacy group, releases its annual report on pesticide levels in common non-organic produce items.

This annual Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen List identifies which 12 non-organic crops are most likely to contain the highest levels of pesticides (“Dirty Dozen”), and for some good news, which 15 crops are most likely to contain the lowest levels (“Clean Fifteen”).

The report is based on data collected during previous years from USDA testing and other sources. EWG acknowledges that this information is not complete since there are many pesticides—such as highly toxic glyphosate—that are not tested for by the USDA.

Nevertheless, the findings help to provide a general overview of which foods may be the dirtiest, and which may be safer options.

2020 Report Findings

This year’s report, The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce was released by the EWG in March 2020, and features some significant findings:

  • Dried raisins were analyzed for the first time, and are considered to be the “dirtiest” with the highest levels of pesticides—even on organic samples. However, the official Dirty Dozen list only focuses on fresh produce items.
  • More than 90% of strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines, and kale tested positive for residues of two or more pesticides.
  • Kale samples showed up to 18 different pesticides on each sample.
  • The most common pesticide found on kale was DCPA (Dacthal®)—classified as a possible carcinogen banned by the EU in 2009.
  • Kale and spinach had an average of 1.1 to 1.8 times the pesticide residue by weight vs. other crops tested.

The report found that even after washing, scrubbing and peeling (when necessary), these Dirty Dozen items still showed the highest percentages of pesticide residue. Health experts, including those within the EWG, recommend avoiding the Dirty Dozen and choosing organic versions whenever possible, to help safeguard health against high levels of toxic pesticide exposure.

2020 EWG Clean Fifteen List

  • Avocados and sweet corn were found to be the cleanest, with less than 2% of samples showing detectable levels of pesticides tested for.
  • Nearly 70% of fruit and vegetable samples showed no pesticides.
  • Only 7% of Clean Fifteen fruit and vegetable samples had two or more pesticides.

Working Toward a Healthier Future

The health impacts and toxicity levels of pesticides continue to spark debate between regulatory agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and environmental and health researchers and advocacy groups like the EWG.
